ERNI Electronics GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1956 by its Swiss parent company ERNI & Co. and was initially named ERNI Elektroapparate GmbH. In the beginning, the company was located in the former monastery of Adelberg. From the outset, the company specialized in relay manufacturing, and its Relay 60 became a major sales success.
ERNI Electronics continuously grew and evolved, and in 1966 began the construction of a dedicated factory building in Adelberg's Seestrasse. As a result of continued expansion, ERNI Electronics grew to popularity in 1968 and became the world's first manufacturer to produce connection systems according to the new DIN 41612 standard; which was to become one of the world's most ubiquitous standards for industrial PCB (= printed circuit board) connection systems.
After the company had grown to 258 employees by its 25th anniversary in 1981, the rapid expansion of the business finally outgrew its premises at Seestrasse a few years later. In 1991, ERNI Electronics therefore opened a new production site at Adelberg's Ziegelhau industrial park. Not only did the company size and capacity expand, but the portfolio of market desired solutions continued to evolve and increased in demand. In the mid-1990s, the ERmet 2mm and SMC 1.27mm connection system product families were developed. The overall product range today comprises PCB connection systems, I/O connection systems, backplanes (for development, production, and 100 percent checks), cable assembly solutions, housings, systems, tools, and presses.
As of January 2014, ERNI Electronics GmbH & Co. KG is being supported purely as a sales company. Product manufacturing remains at the Adelberg premises in the form of ERNI Production GmbH & Co. KG.
